The Sisseton Wahpeton College (SWC) held its first Academic Excellence Honoring on Thursday, February 11, 2021. If the shock and awe of the past year didn't cause enough havoc for SWC students, having to navigate college courses has also been quite a challenge for students. President Azure emphasized how appreciative and proud the college is for the students and their perseverance to succeed. The college really wants to let students know just how invaluable achieving a 4.0 grade point average (G.P.A.) is for each of SWC students. A grade point average is calculated using a formula that includes total number of credits attempted, grades earned, and some math to equate to a perfect score. Each grade receives points, 4 for an A, 3 for a B, 2, for a C and so on. The grades are added up and divided by the total number of credits taken or attempted. For example, a student with 12 credits who earns all A's would end up with 48 points. This amount divided by 12 credits equals 4.0!
The following students all received this 4.0 Academic Excellence Award:
Jrald Red Buffalo
Fabian Kohl Jr.
Randi Lynn Boucher
Mr. Joey Bird started the Student Academic Honoring out in a good way with a Dakota Prayer followed by a brief congratulatory statement from Dean Arpan and Dean Owens. President Azure "fist bumpted" each of the Awarded Students followed by Mr. Eric Jens Sr. singing an honor song for the students. Mr. Jens also provided the guests with a description of the honor song in both Dakota and English. After the congratulatory period, the honored students and guests were provided a traditional meal of Buffalo Stew, Wajopi, and Fry Bread. The meal was prepared by Chef Sing and her Culinary Arts students! It was very nice to have Mr. Tom Wilson with KXSW89.9 recording the entire event on FB Livestream. The affair was truly amazing!
