Geraldine Rose Rencountre, Cante Ohitika Win, “Fierce Hearted Woman”, 96, of Waubay, South Dakota passed away March 2, 2021 at Coteau Des Prairie Hospital, Sisseton, SD. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 8, 2021 at 1:00 P.M. at the Enemy Swim Community Center, Enemy Swim, SD with Valarie Auguston, Jessie Larson, Clyde Kampeska Sr. and Jr. Heminger officiating. Music by Billy Kohl. Pallbearers will be Jayme Lindell, Justin Barse, Anthony Johnson, Richard Fischer, Andrew Martinez, Jon Redday Williams, Jason Rencountre, John Long, Chris Rouillard, and Jessie Hopkins. Honorary Pallbearers Dorthea Wilson, Inez Owen, Nellie LaBatte, Kay Farmer, Sonja Seaboy, Alta German, Lois Montreal, Sonia Rouillard, Pam Bernard, Leo “Gunner” Baker, Robert Dunsmore, Patrick Deutsch Jr., Smiley Shepherd, Doc Wanna, Gerald Thompson, John TwoStars Jr., Gary Owen, Jesse Larson and All Geraldine’s Friends and Family. Wake services will be held on Friday, March 5, 2021; Saturday, March 6, 2021; and Sunday March 7, 2021 all at 7:00 P.M. at the Enemy Swim Community Center, Enemy Swim, SD. Mask and social distancing required. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.

Geraldine was born on June 30, 1924 at the homestead on Blue Dog Lake to Joakin and Florence (Blue Dog) Christenson. She attended Enemy Swim Day School to the 8th grade. She was a home maker with 10 kids and lived in Aberdeen until 1970, then moved to Waubay, and Webster areas. Geraldine worked available seasonal jobs as a waitress, canning, in the potato fields, pheasant cleaning, house cleaning and anything available to Natives. Geraldine loved to play Bingo and see her many friends, relatives and reminisce about the good old days. She loved tribal dances, camping and traditional ways especially eating soup and fry bread. She enjoyed visiting her children, grandchildren and her great grandchildren. Winters were playing cards with her family and not to end up on the dumb dumb table. She didn’t like losing. Veterans were special to her and her mother Florence Blue Dog Christenson and she was proud of her families. militiary service. She loved gardening and filled her yard with flowers. Geraldine will be greatly missed by her familyand many friends.

Geraldine is survived by her nine children Eileen Johnson, Nina Johnson, Sharen, Carole, Douglas Jr., Gayle, Bonnie, Jodie, Robert Rencountre, 3 stepchildren Rhonda, Evelyn, LeRoy Rencountre. Adopted hunka brother Smiley Shepherd Jr., 53 grandkids, 116 great grandkids, 31 great great grandkids, 2 special grandsons who she raised Jason Rencountre and Ron Rencountre; one cousin James Evans; nieces/daughters Belinda Joe, Lana Drapean, Ella Flute, Mona Rencountre, Kathrine Rencountre, Karen Joseph, Donna Rouillard, many nieces and nephews. Geraldine was preceded in death by her parents Joakin and Florence (BlueDog) Christenson; two sons one in infancy and Larry Recountre; brother Floyd Christenson; sister Charlotte (Christenson) Crampton; Three Grandsons Michael Rencountre, Nathaniel “Dan” Long Jesse Rondell, one great grandson, Silas Johnson; one niece Ellen Owen Fisher and one nephew Carl Christenson.
