PROGRAM: Home Health Care and Elderly Affairs – Bonnie Thompson, Director

This office works towards the concerns of: Health care, medical transportation Housing and Elder Abuse.

To assist and advocate for the elderly and handicapped of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate in all areas.

Also provides financial assistance for medical appointments to other health facilities, providing they have a referral letter from PHS. This is for all tribal members.

There is also a board for elderly abuse, called Elderly Protection, which consists of 7 members, 1 police officer, LPN, elderly affairs (1) and 3 board member and Tribal elderly program.

We have 2 (two) home-health care workers, that care for the home-bound or handicapped, that go into homes and help with cleaning, shopping or other duties that are needed to make them comfortable.

Since March 2020, the Home-Health care workers have not worked due COVID-19, this coronavirus has affected many of our elders a lot that are in nursing homes. They say there is a shot which is available now, maybe it will help, give to elders first and caregivers.

The Elderly Affairs program has a program that helps elderly with glasses limit $140.00, 55 yrs and older and medical transportation.

For the month of August 2021 there were 2 deceased elders.
