The Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate exercises the inherent sovereign power to promote public health for its citizens through policies that protect health and ensure safety, consistent with the sixth essential public health services.
The DEA has sent out warnings about the increase in the lethality (death potential) and availability of fake prescription pills containing Fentanyl. The agency states that more than 9.5 million counterfeit pills were seized so far this year nationwide. In our area the increase has been noticed, especially with the youth and young adults. Fentanyl is being added into other drugs like methamphetamine and marijuana. Drug dealers are pressing fentanyl to look like prescription medication such as Percocet or even Ativan. It is reported 2 out of every 5 pills has a lethal dose of Fentanyl. Unless you are getting medications from a provider, you can never be sure what the substance is right now.
Denying that it could happen to you is an incredibly dangerous mindset to have. We have seen these pills on our area! Relatives have overdosed here. The SWO Tribal Executives encourage all relatives in the community to be aware and know the warning signs –talk to your children and your family. Watch the documentary Killer High: The Silent Crisis. (You can google this, and it will come up).
