Wac’ang’a Inc. Sweet Grass,

Wac’ang’a (Sweetgrass) Inc. is a domestic violence prevention and victim services organization that has been serving the Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation and surrounding communities since 1989. Wac’ang’a is a nonprofit organization governed by a Board of Directors; Diantha Larson, Kateri Bird, Lenny Hayes, and Ron Holy Bull. The Executive Director is Evelyn Akipa, other staff are Crystal Owen, Maria Redday, Myra Akipa, Natalie Anderson and Erin Kiyukanpi.

Wac’ang’a services are provided to victims of all gender identities who may encounter sexual assault, dating violence, stalking and domestic violence/battering, sex trafficking and other abuses. Services include but are not limited to crisis counseling, shelter, transportation, legal advocacy, medical advocacy, personal advocacy, emergency financial support (as funding allows), assistance filing victims compensation, support groups and other support services. Wac’ang’a also provides community educational events. A new and upcoming project is the Battering Intervention Program utilizing the Duluth Model’s Power and Control Wheel. The wheel serves as a diagram of tactics that an abusive partner uses to keep their victim in a relationship. The program is geared towards educating the batterer.

The mission of Wac’ang’a is to work for major societal changes needed to eliminate both personal and societal violence in the lives of men, women, LGBTQ, and their children, to provide safety and support for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault by providing a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment.

As a non-profit Wac’ang’a depends on grants from Federal and State Agencies. They welcome donations of needed supplies for the shelter home and monetary donations to assist with costs associated in the operation of services. Wac’ang’a also does fundraising activities throughout the year.

Just recently Wac’ang’a received a donation from the Church Council at Grace Lutheran in Sisseton, SD which was very much appreciated, it will help to provide additional services that are not allowed under grant funding guidelines. They are very grateful for the support from the Parishioners at Grace Lutheran, with their generous donation we can do so much more!

If you would like to make a donation or to help volunteer or need more information on the services, please contact the office (605) 698-4129
